hey, I'd like to explore the world of jazz a bit, but it would be easier if I had some guidelines. So I kindly ask to tell me your 10 favourite jazz songs. Shoot!

some favs

1) My Favorite things - John Coltrane
2)better git it in your soul - Charles Mingus
3) Take 5 - Dave Brubeck
4) Nostalgia in Times Sq - Mingus?
5)Dont mean a thing, if it aint got that swing - Ella and Duke (live)
6) Big Butter and Egg Man -- Louie Armstrong

and I have to mention Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin, though I know it is more Jazz influenced than jazz. But it is just so good.

well I'll chime in with some of mine:

Pick Up Sticks - Dave Brubeck
So What - Miles Davis
Morning Sprite - Chick Corea Akoustic Band (either verision; the live one is better)
My Foolish Heart - Bill Evans Trio
Da Hood - Phineas Newborn, Jr
Maiden Voyage - Herbie Hancock (any version, but the one on "Flood" is especially good)
Ramblin' - Ornette Coleman
Masqualero - Miles Davis Quintet
Round Midnight - Thelonious Monk
Mack The Knife - Louis Armstrong

There are more that venture into fusion. For example, the "Nu-Bop" album I've been giving a good ear too (By Matthew Shipp). St Germain has some intereting acid jazz as well. The songs above represent ten of my favorite "straight' jazz pieces.

John Coltrane - India
Miles Davis - Freddy Freeloader
Louie - Mack The Knife
Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
I have a billion more, but that's the top 4 that really stand out.

epistrophy - thelonius monk
agua de beber - antonio carlos jobim
blue rondo a la turk - dave brubeck
you don't know what love is - not sure who wrote it but i love eric dolphy's version
4 ton mantis - amon tobin
tank! - cowboy bebop theme
e8 boogie - squarepusher
below the bassline - ernest ranglin
treat me mean (i need the reputation) - xploding plastix
and relax - the cinematic orchestra

i realise a lot of those choices aren't traditional jazz.... then again we're not in the 1950s-60s either...

is it being re-released??? when is this? oh yeah, and I think his most jazzy song could possibly be "Iambic 5 poetry"...this is probably one of my favorite songs from sir Squarepusher...you know Pan man, i went to see Tommy play in chicago, but before he got on stage, i had to leave because I was heaving head problems...glad I didn't stay, they said Tommy blew the place out with noise, just ask Evil
