recent cd purchases...

alright to start this off... genre is IRRELEVANT... new or used doesn't matter... if you just got it post about it...

personally i just hooked onto a copy of amon tobin's new album tonight (out from out where)... i really like it... he's definetly moving away from the jazz elements he started with and seems to be moving more towards a heavier big beat sound... while i like his jazzy stuff a lot i like his new direction just as much... 'searchers'... 'el wraith'... and 'mighty micro people' being my early favorite tracks...

New album from Amon Tobin , tomorrow that will be my latest purchase. But my two latest purchases now I think must be "Jaga Jazzist : The Stix" and "Curtis Mayfield : Superfly".

On second read, maybe I should present the albums I mentioned.

Jaga Jazzist : The Stix ; Their second album, just released. Jaga Jazzist is a 10 member band, most play acustic instruments, and a few on keyboards and treatment. With the debut album you could compare them with the rest of the leading electro jazz bunch. But this second album must be many years ahead of the rest of the scene. But the important thing is not that it`s cutting edge, but that I like it. It might be a little too frenzy for some or most, but if you are impressed by talents, you should check this out.

Curtis Mayfield : Superfly ; A good summer album, which reminds me that I haven`t bought an album in a LONG time. It`s a soundtrack album for the movie Superfly (fairly good movie). Half of the songs are listenable ; funky, and some good melodies and lyrics. It`s very well produced and accessible for us that`s not very interested in the rest of the funk scene.

picked up 'destroy erase improve' by meshuggah last week...

i'd heard a lot of good things about this band (mainly in regards to lack of cheese and technical ability)... a lot of people like to make a comaprison to jazz with this band due to their odd time signatures and the lead guitar players style but there is NOTHING jazzy about this album... i still like it and think it's a good album... it's two tonnes heavier than just about anything else called 'metal' out there it just fell short of my expectations... there are a few dynamic shifts throughout the album but for the most part it pummels you at about the same pace with the same intesity throughout... the thematic concept of the evolution of man is kinda cool but i still like fear factory's 'demanufacture' better...

and i agree with an earlier comment by forte that this thread should be moved to the FSS area...

another week another disc... this time i picked up Machito's cuban afro orchestra - mambo mucho mambo...

this is a collection of remastered songs put out by columbia records from the time machito was on contract with them (roughly 1950-52)... this is obviously the more commercial songs he had recorded with the vast majority of the songs featuring vocals... personally i enjoy the instrumental parts of the album far more than the rest... but it's an interesting way to see where latin music and its influence on mainstream pop came from...

right so i made it up to the 'big city' over the weekend and picked up a few things... i'll post more impressions when i listen to the rest a few more times (as if anyone really reads these... hehe)

paid an obscene amount for 'amateur girlfriends go proskirt agents' by xploding plastix... it's WELL worth the money though... fantastic album extra big beats with a nice touch of jazz throughout... the random 70s movie quotes at various points of the album don't add much but don't detract from the music either... definetely one of the best albums i've picked up this year...

also picked up 'blues for the red sun' by kyuss... at a used cd store of all places... quite possibly their best album and a must have for anyone who likes their rock a little more stoned and fuzzy than what's played on mtv... i'd say that these guys sound like what black sabbath would have been like in the early days had they grown up in the desert instead of the uk...

more from the binge...

amon tobin's bricolage... his first cd... much jazzier sounding than his latest work (out from out where) but also has a more electronic feel than the 2 cds released between the two... kinda hard to explain but i still really like the cd... my only complaint is that it's really long... like 80 minutes... not necessarily a bad thing... but not always possible to listen to the entire album in one sitting...

the last 2 from my binge...

'the black saint and the sinner lady' by charles mingus... a lot of people consider this one of his best albums and one of the best jazz albums ever... i can understand it's place in history since it was the first jazz album to use studio overdub technology but there's just something about it that doesn't fit right... the first time the classical/flamenco guitar is introduced it fits well since the band kicks into something that sounds a little more latin.... but it's use in the last track to signal thematic changes seems so akward in comparisson to the style the horns are playing... it's still a good album it just doesn't sound great to my ears...

and the last one...
'out to lunch' by eric dolphy... considered his best studio album... i really like the first 3 tracks the last 2 kinda go long but are still good... the bass style of the first track blows my mind completely... it stills sounds fresh today nearly 40 years after it was recorded... and i can't listen to the 3rd song (gazzelloni) without thinking of the beastie boys... not sure just how it happened but they use the same melody when they rap 'i'm like ma' bell i've got the ill communication' on get it together....

I`ve gotten my hands on some new albums, with varying luck.

Electro Jazz Sessions : It didn`t sound very good at the record shop, but it seemed to have so many great artists that I just had to take a listen at my home stereo. It was quite good, half good half uninteresting, and it`s 2cd`s, so that will make up one good cd . What I noticed on this cd is that much of the new electro jazz movement isn`t too keen on making challenging and interesting music, more like laidback and nice sounds. Fair enough but I think they`re not using much of the potential that comes with fusing jazz and electronics.

The Velvet Underground & Nico : This is funny junkie music. It has got a lot of humor, though I don`t really understand much more than half of the lyrics. But it`s put together by some great musichians so it`s an enjoyable listen and escape from all the cd`s I have with hifi sounds. Title? nothing, though it makes a big statement about being produced by Andy Warhol.

21st Centry Drum&Bass 02 : Not much to say here. Standard drum and base, three cds, three styles. First is Ok, second is pretty good, third is waste. I couldn`t really expect more from a little uncreative buy.

Pink Floyd, Meddle : I just had to get a cd from Pink Floyd though I`ve got access to much of their work on LP`s from my fathers collection. What I like most about this record is the nice acoustic work combined with one of the most space out tracks, Echoes.
I don`t really have to say anything about Pink Floyd

Ugress, Resound : I don`t really know what I think about this. First off it`s a sample based trip hop album. The ideas are good, the sound is good, but it doesn`t really stick. No, it doesn`t make sense to me neither.

Stereolab, Emperor Tomato Ketchup : I`ve been meaning to get this or another album from them for many years, but didn`t spare the money until now. It`s cheeky french electro rock pop, and it`s a nice listen. But I think it has lost some edge from the first time I heard it. Something I will listen to now and then I think.
