Big band is my favorite stuff. Ellington and Glenn Miller and that sort of thing. I also love Louis Armstrong. He pretty much tried a little of everything, and it was all good. I like old Dave Brubeck stuff too.

Uh, what soda dreamer said
I'd say that I'll always have a soft spot for the funky fusion exemplified by people like Herbie Hancock in the 70's. I once said "Watermelon Man" was my theme song, but now it's "Fat Albert Rotunda". Hey hey hey!
But the late 50's-60's stuff is my favorite. Time Out, Kind of Blue, almost all of the Miles Quintet stuff, and Bill Evans head my personal fave list. There is something I find particularly exciting about the Miles Quintet, paticularly the mid-late 60's albums (Miles Smiles, Sorcerer, Nefertiti, ESP).

I really like fusion, such as:
Allan Holdsworth
John McLaughlin
Miles Davis (*****es Brew)
Tribal Tech
as well as bebop, cool, hardbop (I love Coryell's hard bop stuff), and i also really like avante-garde/free jazz like the Free Music Quintet. Most styles of jazz appeal to me.
To indcline: If you haven't already, you should check out Bill Laswell, especially the album he did with Toshinori Kondo and Eraldo Bernocchi entitled "Charged." Seems like right along the lines of what you are talking about.
