Bread vs. Carpenters
OK, here's a poll only for people who are willing to admit they listen to the poppiest of 70s pop at least now and then...

I will not admit to listening to either... Truth is though, I tune into many sappy 70's pop only stations on the internet... One of my favorites is called "Those Awful 70's" and it plays all sorts of stuff from Bread, The Carpenters, Tony Orlando and others... But I can't say I have ever owned any albums by those types of bands... But I do like to sing along to some of their stuff here and there,, (man, I must be getting way too old or something... As a teen I was brainwashed into thinking that if you listened to Bread and the Carpenters, your weren't worthy of having groups like Zeppelin in your music collection.. Teen peer pressure is one awful thing)...
Bottom line, I need help!!! I need to get over this "block" I have to "uncool" 70's pop music.. If I like it, I should just enjoy it and that should be that... I always admit to liking sappy 60's pop because I say it was part of my early childhood, but I can't seem to get over the brainwashing of 70's pop... What is next for me,, Barry Manilow??? AGGGGGGGGGGGGG....

I haven't heard of either...not that I can think of anyway. I mean I can't put any tunes to the names. Is that a good thing?!?

Oh, I'm enjoying this thread!
OK, so now I'm going to let the cat out of the bag...I voted for the Carpenters! Bread was a good soft rock band, and I like their music a lot. But the Carpenters made far more interesting records. Sure they were easy listening, sure they were sappy, sure they were uncool, but the arrangements, the harmonies, the songwriting (both Richard Carpenter's colaborations and the great songs they did by other writers) were superb. It's no accident that a bunch of 90s alternative artists enthusiastically took part in a tribute album to Richard and Karen ("If I Were A Carpenter") a number of years back. A lot of very legit people in music totally respect their talent and their musical legacy. There's no shame in being a Carpenters fan.

O.K., then I can come out of the closet and admit I like some of their tunes... I admit it,, I am free,,, wooo hooooo... (and yes, I watched the Behind The Music special on them on VH1)...
Once "Close to You" gets in my head, it is stuck there for the rest of the day (of course I have never denied being a Burt Bachrach fan)... Richard Carpenter's arrangement really makes the song in my opinion...

I like both groups and I do have some of their cd's in my collection. I like Bread a little better though. "On The Waters" is my favorite Bread album.

Bread, I suppose - though I haven't heard much by The Carpenters. There are other 70's soft(er) rock groups that I'd probably listen to before either of these - America, 10CC, Gordon Lightfoot, Cat Stevens, Loggins & Messina,.... On The Waters & Manna are pretty solid albums, but I really wasn't exposed to The Carpenters all that much.
