New Moby - Thoughts

Ok... I am a big MOBY fan. I pretty much like most of his work except some of very early dance songs he developed that were uninspiring and well... nothing that hasn't already been done before.

So, when 18 was just recently released... I was anticipating him taking the sound in new directions as most of his CD's do but I was bit disappointed. The new CD isn't bad but most of it sounds like leftovers from the Play CD. Someone asked me if I thought he had sold out and went commercialized with his music and I can't really answer that with a yes or no. It just sounds to me like maybe the creative edge he used to have has been lost.

Has anyone else heard this CD and what are your thoughts?

personally i though play was crap... i couldn't make it through to the end... i had to give it back to my friend after track 5 or 6... to me it sounded like the same song slightly changed so it could have a new track name over and over... i might give it another chance if i ever see it in the $3 bin at a pawn shop...

I wouldn`t think of Play as a sellout; if it was it would have been a bad sellout because it didn`t sell much the first year. From what I understand it was used in so many commercials it eventually got popular. But then I allways have some weir theories about things.

Now about the music, I liked one of Moby`s early albums, very electronic album. It sounded very different and interesting from the other electronic/rave music I was listening to when I was 12. What really stood out was the energy of the music, and I think that was the reason that I liked it.
Play sounds new and original to me, but it is plain boring and that`s why I don`t like it.
18? now we can start to talk about sellout

Moby's very first album from Instinct was okay. I wasn't too impressed by it. glad that I only got it for 4 bucks.

Everything is Wrong was pretty good. I like most of the songs on that album.
The rock album he did was bad, really bad. I just don't enjoy it at all.
Play got some good songs, and some songs are just flat and boring, not very engaging at all.
18, haven't even got it. probably not going to buy it because my musical taste has changed. moby just not aggressive/dark enough for me.

I like his little essays in every album. I agree with a lot of things he said. but his music just doesn't do it for me anymore.

I bet he can't believe his luck. He produces a shit album, markets it to the max, sells it to all these big companies and makes a tonne of money. Thats probably why he's permanently got this self-satisfied grin on his face. He can't believe the con job he's just pulled.

you are right muzyka, I was really surprised how Play took off. I got the Cd when it just came out. and then, after a year or so, I started hearing his songs from that CD everywhere. I was like "what the fock???".

well, more power to him, he mostly will try to save the world than, say, eminem.

i'm not gonna argue the sellout thing... i agree... he played the corporate game and is reaping the rewards big time... but unlike just about every corporate manager/ceo out there he doesn't seem to be dicking around the little people to get his 'success'...
