Syd, what kind of trouble are you trying to start? Seriously, this is a hard matchup. Personally, I prefer Elton John. Now who do I think is better? That's a hard one. Joel was a songwriter and musician. Elton wouldn't have gotten nearly as far without Bernie Taupin. Joel was the better of the two.
i'm not a huge fan of either... but there are more songs by elton john that i can stand hearing than there are billy joel songs... i don't EVER want to hear 'we didn't start the fire' ever again...
and in a street fight i think elton john would kick billy joel's ass...

I realize that Billy Joel is the greater talent, since he is lyrically as magnificent as he is musically. But Elton is too much of a sentimental favorite for me not to give him the vote. All my high school gang were very into Elton. His music was a huge part of the soundtrack to my teens.

i find he has more style, more punches and sarcasm in his music/words.
i collect his works from "the stranger" to "nylon curtain". they're great !
