Both exceptional musicians/songwriters, but I gravitate toward Elton moreover. For me its not a question of who has fewer songs that annoy me - none of Elton's songs really annoy me at all. Why not?! Because I don't listen to radio stations that would play Crocodile Rock 100 times a day. When I listen to Elton John I'm usually pulling Madman Across The Water or Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - occasionally Tumbleweed Connection or Honkey Chateau. As for Billy Joel, The Stranger and 52nd Street are excellent albums, but there's not much of Billy's work beyond these that I find interesting.

Honestly, I can't think of anything by Billy Joel that rocks as effectively as "Love Lies Bleeding", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" or "The Bitch Is Back". But that's just my opinion.

I was thinking the same thing... Perhaps decades of bland Elton music had made people forget that he had some choice rockers in his early days...
