Thumbs up Rachelle Ferrell

I just wanted to write a few words about an amazing vocalist named Rachelle Ferrell. Like Anita Baker and Oleta Adams, Ferrell is a jazz/r&b crossover artist, but her vocal timbre and range are well above the median for contemporary performers. There is one CD in particular that I'm speaking of - First Instrument. Her perceptive subtlety in the ensemble is amazing, and her unique approach to standards accentuates a sort of feral quality in the music that is very appealing. This, unfortunately, is her only Jazz release. After this in 1989, she returned to her roots and has had a couple of acclaimed r&b CDs. There seems to be a bit of discussion about dominant female Jazz singers here and there, and I wanted to share this with everyone. This is an extraordinary CD of vocal prowess and gorgeous arrangements. Her version of Autumn Leaves, the heartbreaking Johnny Mercer tune, is my personal favorite, and well worth the price alone.

Has anyone else heard First Instrument by Rachelle Ferrell?

Here's the track list:

You Send Me
You Don't Know What Love Is
Bye Bye Blackbird
Prayer Dance
Inchworm
With Every Breath I Take
What Is This Thing Called Love
My Funny Valentine
Don't Waste Your Time
Extensions
Autumn Leaves
I think she is the best!! She has indeed a very unique approach to the jazzstandarts, and to me she is just as great as any of the other famous jazzdivas. I really like her voice. I don't have the album myself, but a friend of mine does. Actually I just discovered her a month ago. I'm ashamed I didn't listen to her music earlier. I'll check out the album a bit more, so I can give you my favourite.

Yes, by all means
I attribute this version of Autumn Leaves to a pretty substantial period of my life, so it has adjunct meaning. There are a number of tracks that are quite remarkable. Enjoy!
