Software-free expandable mp3 player

Argh, there are just too many mp3 player devices out there! I'm somewhat particular in what I'm looking for, and it doesn't seem to exist. My only basic requirements are as follows:

I'm looking for a device that doesn't require some annoying software interface to be installed on whatever computer I use to upload files. Ideally, it should be something I can plug into any computer with a USB port and be able to upload or download any type of file (not just mp3s).

I know such things exist, as USB flash pens, or whatnot. Here's my other requirement: I'm looking for a device that has upgradeable memory. Something along the lines of a Smartmedia card reader or any of those sorts. On-board memory is good, but rarely enough, and I really like the idea of having removable media, so I can use flash cards like albums or disks. I guess something that has alot (ie: 5GB+) of memory would be ok too, but I prefer to avoid things with breakable moving parts.

Is there such thing as an mp3 player that has both of these features? Of course, cost, sound quality, and a number of other things are important, but these two features are my top priority. Please help.

The Creative Nomad Julebox II is good, I use two for DJ-ing sometimes. Expensive though, but worth every penny.

I've looked at the Nomad series. They do look nice, but what I'm worried about is that they might require their software to be installed. Can you transfer to and from the various Nomads without installing any software?

Why is the software such a big deal? There arent many decent players that will let you get away with it. I THINK you can use your own software with the Jukebox, I dunno, I just use the standard software that comes with it.

The reason the software is such a big deal is that I'd like to be able to use the device to bring files that are too large for a 3.5" disk. Say for example that I am at a meeting giving a presentation somewhere. The Powerpoint(less) file is larger than 1.44 MB, so I put it on my mp3 player. At the meeting, I don't have Administrator access on their computer, so I can't install anything. I can, however, plug a device into their USB port which contains my file. Thus it makes for a much easier way to tranport larger files. While I hardly expect to be tranporting files larger than 128 MB, I'd like to also be able to fit a larger playlist on the thing, even if it means removable media like flashcards.

BTW, a service rep from Creative says that none of their larger or expandable devices will work without software, but the non-expandable MuVo will.

If your presenting music, why noy just use a male to male 3.5mm jack cord into the line out of the player, and line in of the computer, and play straight off the player?

The music is just for entertainment. What I would be presenting is work related. They're two totally separate uses. Being able to listen to very long playlists makes those eight hour car rides more pleasant. Being able to transfer or access my non-music files from anywhere makes my job a whole heckuva lot easier.

I don't think you can get a player that doesn't require some type of software.

Another option could be an mp3 cd playing machine. That way you could have music and programs on it or you could ask your admin to put on a program that allows you to copy the files. If I was you I'd just buy the player and a storage device seperately.
