Your Favorite Jazz Artist

At this point Id have to say Duke Ellington(hes more blues but still jazzy), Mahavishnu Orchestra or John Scofield.

Who are your favorites?

My favorite of right now i would have to say is sonny rollins. I went up and saw him play up north of where i live and he put on an AMAZING show. he really knows how to play and for a man who is as old as he is he can still wail away on his sax.

while mingus, monk and parker come very close, coltrane wins, because i think as a musician he is without a doubt the biggest proponent of the saxophone in jazz music, as well as having had a huge influence on how the music has been played ever since. of course, even besides the influence, he is a more skillful and meaningful player than any other jazz musician, except perhaps monk, in that his playing creates a dense fabric of music, that is impressive not only in the individual parts but as a whole, and in such pieces as 'a love supreme' or 'giant steps' his solos take on a context and purpose which i never saw in the playing of armstrong or ellington or gillespie.
