Proper ska music, erm.... I would say proper ska music has a "2 and 4" rythym, a clean guitar sound (no punk distortion), at least three different kinds of brass instrument, and good soulful vocals. Ska-punk is a horrible, horrible, distortion like a bastard child of ska and punk. The integral part of ska is the rythym on beats 2 and 4, whereas ska-punk passes anything with trumpets as ska.

You see ska music, is a lot older than punk - ska originated in 1950s jamaica, as a fusion of jazz, R&B, swing, and jamaican mento rythyms. I dont object to new generations making it their own, there are alot of good third wave ska bands and alot of good two-tone bands. But to me, ska-punk is a jack of all trades and a master of none, and most hardly qualifies as ska at all, it gives the genre a bad name which may well be why you (Onslaught) consider ska to be crap...

Props to W.C.Hero...articulate and well-said, dread...I am a former member of U.S. 80's mod/ska band, The Untouchables...When I joined the band on keyboards,I was seriously into reggae, until the guys re-introduced me to ska...it was like, ska was a thing from the past, reggae was the future...but as I began performing with the U.T.'s, ska started growing on me again...I saw Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra just a couple of months ago....they relit that fire for me... the energy...beautiful, fluid and captivating...
I don't like being pummelled into musical submission...ska can naturally push the beat...
anyway, that's my two cents...by the way, anyone interested in hearing my current songs, please check out my new website: http://joshharrismusic.com/
I have a coule of ska tracks on my new CD, but none yet ready for download....B#....
