The American version of folk-rock always seems pretty wishy-washy to me. The British and Irish stuff has more muscle to it - try the Waterboys, the Pogues, the Oyster Band, Waterson-Carthy (and their component parts!) - not much whining in there, I thnk you'll find.
Now that's more like what I joined this forum for - to get some new stuff to listen to and tips where to find it. Excellent post - thank you very much.
