Production OF Rap/Hip Hop
I produce allot of rap and hip hop, but I would like to know if anyone could tell me if they know of real fat and deep rap kick drums. I would also like to know if anyone knows of deep bass guitar plugins, as well as realistic sounding symphony sounds.
I use QBase VST 32 and have been messing with a bunch of different plugins but haven't found those at high quality. Any ideas would be great. As well a tips
Thank You
Jim

how about this, does anyone know what dre uses? Or mainly what drum vst would be perfect for hip hop/rap with a solid kick and what bass guitar plug would be? I'm finishing my studio now, so the bass guitar won't be too muck of an issue as I know how to play and I'll throw in some of my own recordings. But for the time being I'm getting real dicouraged. It takes too long ta get the sound I need from the drums and bass, and still thats not good enough.
thanks for the help

Don't get me wrong except for the powerful kick and bass guitar what I'm making (and will come out once I get the right plugin) Has been mistaken for Dre's. Not the beet but the style feel lyrical technique and quality. Thats why it's so frustrating! Qbase is great in allot of ways, but is it possible to get that sound from it? I like the freedom of qbase and the power of reason. Is there a happy medium?
(If my spelling suck, sew me!)

well, making music is a long process. so step back and take a deep breathe if you feel frustrated. my very very first track(not hip hop, noise construction) took me 4 months to construct. it sounds pretty good. it has no bass, no drum, just cut up noises which are constructed into beats with a drone track(part of it is cut up too) in the background. I use Protools Free and Reaktor.
I am sure there are ways to make it sound what dr dre uses but I wouldn't go there. for one, I want to have my own sound, not anyone's. if I can find out my own way to do something, I rather take a longer harder path. but that's just me. it always amazed me that people really want to find out what their favorite artists use to make their tracks.
but you seem to be anal about getting your sounds right, that's a good attitude.

The style is not the same just quality and substance I should say. I do have my own style. So far I have like this control group right, and when I finish a new song I give it to these people. When the hear it they love it. It's followed by "That's different but real good". The newer stuff is utilizes the more advanced features of Qbase giving a great sound. But the kick and bass stuck. So I got this program yesterday, fooled with it and now I have something ta play with. It's Reason!!!!! God what a good program. I linked it with cubase via rewire and off I went. Touched up a few things and got some sounds under control. ;0)
I am still interested in hearing any feedback from people. And if you use Pro Tools Evilmatik, how is that? I was about to order it yesterday but wanted ta ask first.
Thanks
Jim

Protools is like music industry standard, also, the program is widely used on video post production(soundtracks, sound effects that sorta thing). I think it is a really nice program, not too hard to learn, even for me( me don't know shit). I got the ProTools Free and it works great so far. if you want to try it out, go to www.download.com and check it out. but I read users reviews and they said the PC version doesn't work too well. I got the Mac version and it has not given me any problems. honestly, I only know probably 20% of the whole program, I haven't been using a lot of things that can perform on that program. but I would give it an A for a focking free program.
actually, my only problem with Protools Free is that I can't save on my firewire drive because you have to use hardwares that fit certain requirements and mine is kinda old and stuff...

To add,
Dre releases many of his beats as instrumentals (as do a lot of rap beat makers, because people like to freestyle on them) which means the sound effects are out there, all by themselves, just waiting to be yanked out. Bass drums are particularily easy because even if you can't get it entirely by itself, you can filter out the high hat or whatever with an eq.
You could also just get a hold of the beat box he uses, and sample the effects. I forget what the thing is called but I'll post back, I have it written down soemwhere.
ps - nice links!

mix tones with kicks
if you want to deepen a kick drum, mix an acoustic kick sample with a low sine wave. experiment with tones in the lower range, probably about 50 hz. there's lots of programs out there that will generate straight tones like that. see if that helps you out.
eq'ing the bass up on an acoustic kick sample may not get you anywhere because the frequencies you're looking for probably aren't there in high enough quantity and you'll end up muddying your kick.
i don't know what dre does.
