i am sorry but i have to disagrree... jeff buckley had a huge cult following before he died, his death shocked and saddened many and affected peoples lives (including mine) all over the world.

To say that someone becomes more popular after they die may be true, but to say they wouldn't be popular unless they died is naive, insensitive and stupid. It is narrowminded to think not many people were jeff buckley fans before he died...

I didn't say he wouldn't be popular. Where did you read that? Even in my comment that you quoted it doesn't say that. Sorry if you didn't understand what I was saying.

Cool

Hi, I found this forum while browsing for Jeff Buckley. Recently I read a recommendation on "Ours", IMHO quite an underrated New Jersey based band who they said has a very similar voice to the late Buckley.

Well, I searched around and ransacked CD shops around, from the 2ndhands to the HMV - but no luck. So I resort to internet, and found only a few of their songs. So this is just my opinion based on listening to a select few of their songs (they are seriously difficult to get).

The singer (Gnecco) indeed has a voice that reminds you not only of Jeff, but also of Bono IMHO. Amazing vocal range and falsetto - but I'd say Gnecco's voice is not as pretty/ whimsical... it's easier to pigeonhole Gnecco's voice into rock than Jeff's (I can't pigeonhole Jeff's). But that said, Ours seems to be worth checking out, and I plan to find/ order their CDs (.

Anyway, I read previous post mentioning "Ours" too

Quote:
hey if you like jeff buckley check out "ours"
their singer was jeff buckley's guitar technician while he was on tour, and their stuff sounds very similar, although he hates being compared to jeff. i heard of them at field day
I'm not sure whether my information is correct or not, but I read his interview online from here
http://www.angelfire.com/music3/Ours.../Aquarian.html
and he said this:

Quote:
Jeff and I as singers had the same influences. I think what I liked the most about Jeff were the things that he brought out that were basically the same things as my original influences.

He did his own thing, but you can$B!G(Bt fake what that is. That$B!G(Bs why I fell in love with Jeff. He became a close friend. I was influenced by him as well to an extent. But we were also influenced by K.D. Lang, Freddie Mercury, Elvis, Roy Orbison, it just goes on.

Part of the problem is that unfortunately right now nobody wants to step up and sing anymore. So when an in-depth singer comes along who really likes to put it all on the line, it$B!G(Bs easy to compare him to someone else because there are so few of us.

You$B!G(Bve got Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Bono (U2), PJ Harvey, and Chris Cornell (Rage Against The Machine?). There$B!G(Bs a few others, but like no one really wants to write great songs and sing in key anymore.

The times are gone, sometimes I think, where you can do something really pretty and then really explosive. Jeff was really good at that.

I$B!G(Bm going to clear something up that$B!G(Bs turned into this big old rumor that follows me around. Like I said, Jeff and I became friends, and one night he was running late to a show. He asked me to take his guitar in a cab to a show for him. Somewhere it started getting around that I was his roadie. How ridiculous is that? I took a guitar to one show one time for the guy. I don$B!G(Bt know$B!D(BI guess I just try and write good songs.
I don't know whether he's the one who got wrongly the Chris Cornell being in RATM or the interviewer though :P

Anyway, I would really love to hear everyone's recommendation on music - Jeff has left quite a void that's rather difficult to fill. I read someone mentioning Iota - mind recommending me an album please?

BTW Jeff's Legacy Edition Live in Sin-E is amazing - intimate interaction, and Jeff feels so alive here...

Here's iOTA's web site:

http://www.iota.com.au/

I'd say that "The Hip Bone Connection" would be their best album but I haven't listened to it or any of their albums in full so I can't really tell you...sorry. They're worth having a listen to anyway...and I think you can do that on their site too.

I quite like Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk, Mystery White Boy & Live At L'Olympia...
Haven't heard Songs To No One and I'm not planning to change that, I'm interested in Live At Sin-é though, but it's way too expensive at the moment...
But yeah you could say that it's an easy cash in for his mother, Mary Guibert...

that quote a bit ago about thinking jeff wouldnt be as popular had he not died ithink is really wrong. jeff would have likely gone on to become infinitley more popular had he been able to continue on with his career. i imagine he would have become one of the most heralded songwriters of our time, which to a very small degree he has been. having his life cut so tragically short will likely makeit that his music will fade significantly with the aging and death of our generation as he did not get the time to solidify his place in history. there will not be jeff buckley exhibits at the rock n roll hall of fame in 30 years, but if jeff had lived ibelieve there most definitely would hav been.

How can someone become infinately more popular?

Death does help quite a lot: compare Lennon to McArtney. Look how popular Johnny Cash has suddenly become, even I bought the best of. George Harrison got his first no1 the week after his death too.
