yeah, Jeff Buckley is really quite amazing

Great voice, good songwriter - Grace is really an amazing album

Sketches for my Sweetheart, the drunk, and his other posthumous albums (although i havent heard them other than 'my sweetheart') are extremely raw, and he never intended them to be released

They were basically Jeff mucking around in the recording room, just playing with songs that he had in his moind that he was considering for his next album

their singer was jeff buckley's guitar technician while he was on tour, and their stuff sounds very similar, although he hates being compared to jeff. i heard of them at field day

Question

something that struck me across the face the first time i heard it, and i was wondering if anyone else thought the same...
does anyone think "the sky is a landfill" is inspired by George Orwell's 1984 ?

Circle around the park
Joining hands in silence (remember the part where julie and winston hold hands for a second during the announcement that the war was being fought against west asia or something like that)
Watch the evil black the sky

The storm has ripped the shelter
Of illusion from our brow (their sudden knowledge of the truth behind ingsoc)
This power is no mystery to us now.

Leave your spirit genocide
The cancer you won’t remove
We cast our funeral rose inside
And bury the need to prove
Our mutilation is to gain from the system

Ooh, turn your head away
From the screen, oh people (turn your head away from the telescreens)
It will tell you nothing more
Don’t suck the milk of flaccid Bill K.
Public’s empty promise
To the people that the public can ignore

This way of life is so devised
To snuff out the mind that moves
Moving with grace the men despise (despising grace -- the anti-sex league...)
And women have learned to lose

Throw off your shame or be
a slave to the system

I see you take another drag (this is a stretch, but it reminded me of the victory cigarettes)
One more lost soul to raise your flag
The sky is a landfill
I see you take another drag
Let’s see you take another drag

You like to dance to the rolling
Head of the adulteress
You sing in praise of suicide
We know you’re useless
Like cops at the scene of the crime

With your steroids and your feedbag
And your stable and your trainer (the animalistic nature of the 'broken spirits' in oceania)
I got a mail bomb for you Mister Strong Arm.

Throw out the stones from all the cemetery homes
For the violence of a nation gone by

Or the politics of weakness
And the garbage dump of souls
That will now black the sky

Their yellow haze and crowds of eyes
Will plug up the mind that moves
Moving with grace the men despise
And women have learned to lose
We’ll share our bodies
In disdain for the system (the first time that winston and julia had sex, she mentioned something about it being in defiance of the thought police)

Oh, I see you take another drag
One nation bends to kiss the hag
The sky is a landfill
I see you take another drag
I see you take another drag
I have no fear of this machine! (YEAH!)

there's more in it...if i sat and did a full analysis, but it *is* 3 am and i have to see the dalai lama tomorrow )
everytime i hear it though, it's seems so connected to that book and i haven't been able to find any commentary on the origins of the song...::sigh::
