From just that it sounds like it might be "Miss Celie's Blues" performed by Tata Vega. Do the lyrics continue with... "Sistah, we're two of a kind... So, Sistah, I'm keepin' my eye on you" ?? If so, it can be found on The Color Purple Motion Picture Soundtrack produced by Quincy Jones.

Glad to help! The entire soundtrack is excellent - when you've got a producer like Quincy Jones it's hard to go wrong. There's another remarkable gospel/blues performance by Tata on that CD called "Maybe God's tryin' to tell you somethin" She has a remarkable voice that can be quite gritty (like Tina Turner) and a great range. Not sure why isn't more in the mainstream.
