Some of these lyrics absolutely blow me away, but most the time he just strikes me as being whiny and pretentious. I saw him in concert once and he walked off in the middle of his set because the audience wasn't quiet enough. Nevertheless, some of his songs still blow me away. Thoughts?

I've downloaded a couple of tracks. Some I don't like but others I love, like sunrise, sunset and the calender hung itself. Lover I don't Have To Love is good too.
"Haligh Haligh, A Lie, Haligh" is one of the most haunting songs I've ever heard, but then there's just loads of crap.
Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes) released the first album in 1998 i think, but he has been going since 1995, and he had a side project called Desaparecidos which was similar lyrics but electric, faster punk that came out in 2002

they are just lame. their singer/songwriter/guitarist dude reminds me a bit of corgan in his seemingly endless ego. but i do see the potential for a great record some day, but i'm not holding my breath

letting off the happiness is one of my favourite albums.
and Oberst is surprisingly poetic for just 23,and his sometimes whiney voice sings his songs in harmony with the bigband-ish music.
i've been starved for something like Bright Eyes.
some people don't like conor's wavering voice, but i really like it because it makes the listener sensitive to emotion. his songs are amazing too. for being only 23, he sure knows a lot and his observations about the world are amazing. you would have to be a musical retard for his songs not to deeply affect you. i saw him in concert and i was sobbing by the end of it. i sat in the front row and i swear that he also had tears coming down his cheeks too from getting so into his stuff. he is amazing at making his voice and guitar interpret emotions. and he's a wonderful songwriter too. genius is an understatement.
