look, Bright Eyes is nice. Yeah, just nice. I get bored sitting and listening to Bright Eyes for some reason. I don't dislike Oberst's stuff. I'd just rather listen to other people in the genre who, in my opinion, do it better. Bright Eyes seems too filtered out to me, if that makes any sense...
for all of your sakes I hope he doesn't OD anytime soon. I hear he's trying really hard to do so.

who are the ones that do it better then? I like Bright Eyes quite a bit, some of his songs are only so-so, but he has already written some true gems...
and I second the not-OD wish...

I suppose what I meant to say was not that I dislike Bright Eyes, I think it's good, I guess I just dont understand why Bright Eyes is getting so much recognition when so much music that I prefer is overlooked. I know that Bright Eyes has something, because people are crazy about him, I enjoy the music, but don't understand the phenomenon. It's a personal preference thing, I suppose.
Also, upon reading my first post, the whole "I hope for all your sakes" thing sounds a bit sarcastic, that wasn't my intention, I don't want him to die. I want him to live.

Maybe it is just me but Bright Eyes blew me away...I was waiting for something to do this...I buy all the "next big thing" albums, or the less known but ppl say they are awesome albums such as the Muse, Interpol, Libertines, etc.... just looking for something to blow me away... and Bright Eyes did it... gives me hope for the future of music... I'm quite tired of the stuff I see on TV and hear on the radio (I try to avoid it for the most part) but hope is a powerful thing... and I hope Ryan Adams next album makes Bright Eyes look terrible.... (Ryan Adams being my favorite artists at the moment...well that is still making music)

i like bright eyes. i admit though i'm one of those new fans - i didn't discover them before all the hype. i think conor oberst is a beautiful lyricist. i know a ton of people like them because of the emotion in the songs, which i like, but i think there's more to them than "emo." personally i just like the lyrics because they make you think, more than anything.

I guess I was a young child when I heard commander venus play. Little did I know it then, but all those guys would become great musicians, especially conor. I love Bright eyes, because it's so much raw emotion writing in a non-cliche way. He doesn't try to sing his best, he just sings what he thinks expresses his emotions the best. My favorite album is Letting off the happiness, Fevers and Mirrors, and lifted. Amazing stuff. Go check out Going for the Gold. Great song.

If I remember correctly his voice sucks ass. However, Bright Eyes seems to be the hot ticket right now.

Whiny emo kid with a lame acoustic guitar trying too hard. People've told me he's the next Dylan, but even then Dylan's voice is more tolerable. And his lyrics aren't depressing. I don't know what it is about emo, but listening to some depressed guy (or girl, i don't discriminate) with some weird side parted haircut whine about how they hurt just strikes me as lame beyond words

I find his voice acceptable. It's not bad just something most people aren't use too. As for the next dylan comment, yea I hear that a lot, but that is due to his amazing writing skills and his 'political' songs. Yes he has political songs too.
