oh, you'll be surprised.
there are 3 types of genres here in singapore/malaysia
one : young underground bands which sprouted during the alternative movement in the early 90s. most of these local bands tried (very hard) to write and perform english-medium songs, but most ended up being a b-grade 3-chords type-o guitar band that never made it even in the country itself. and their english is so poor, you won't know what they're warbling. the best of these i've found is one group called : Nice Stupid Playground, which had only one album out.
two : the local Malay scene filled with either pop/rock or traditional-style Malay language music. now, these are better quality cause its original. but they sound all too familar and mundane between each band/artist. man, sometimes you couln't tell them apart. of these, the longest oustanding group, since 1969 is one called the : Alleycats (with an Indian lead vocalist), Sheila Majid (modern Malay jazz) and M. Nasir (pop/rock/tradi-style)
three : the local Chinese scene. mostly are copycats of the Canto/Mandarin scene in Hong Kong/Taiwan. quite good quality, but not my stuff, can't comment.
