R&B is absolute crap compared to what it used to be. R&B used to be a very good and viable genre, and was where rock music came from. Now it's sappy love songs and whining.

What about the Beastie Boys, Jurassic 5, Deltron 3030...and ontop of those you could also mention the many independant hip-hop turntabalists like grandmaster flash, dj krush etc. There are too many to choose from when you think about it.
I'd much rather a DJ than a producer anyday!

No offense, but you don't know alot about hip-hop! What about :
Beastie Boys
Run DMC
Jurassic 5
DJ Shadow
DJ Swamp
DJ Dan the Automator (Deltron 3030)
Grandmaster Flash
Kool Herc
Public Enemy
The Xecutioners
Invisible Scratch Pickles
Mixmaster Mike
DJ Q-Bert
Kid Koala
the list goes on.......
Sorry if I sound like a dick....
If those groups you listen were "The only (popular) acts you could think of", then you've got alot to learn........
What's the first hip-hop album you should go get right now? Aesop Rock -Labor Days on Definitive Jux Records-( www.definitivejux.net) all the acts on that label are great! Check em' out.....

I like the old hiphop but that doesnt mean i dislike new one, new refreshing sounds are allways good, its just the popular hip-hop has changed its image, but the popular hip-hop is just a small part of the actual produced and played music and i think it doesnt represent hip-hop as a whole.

Nothing is ever what it used to be, that's the nature of time.

Good call, DK.
I saw the question more as has new hip-hop lost what it used to be in which my answer was no.

it hasnt lost its social relevance, nor has the 'bling bling' era really changed things...sugarhill gang talked about women and partying too, just without the language...and while they arent as popular, lots of great mc's are still out there

I get what you're all saying, but what I guess was really getting me was that what was (or still is) hip hop is not being represented properly. Homeless Cop pointed out the fact that there are a lot of Hip hop acts out there but we (including me) don't hear about em.
On DJ's not being important in Hip hop:
DJ's were what made hip hop what it was! They need to be there to make the act legitimate!

It's depressing that such a unique artform has changed so much.

As far as I can tell, the only thing that's changed is the "making money" part. Hip Hop was always about image and bangin' girls...
