Good Indie

This is a genre I wouldn't see myself listening to at first sight, but since I am totally open-minded I'm going to ask you for recommendations on good Indie anyway. With good I mean that as a minimum it shouldn't be the stereotypical high school emo that snowboard game soundtracks are filled with. Geryon once recommended Ballboy and I liked that, which made me (sort of) lose the prejudice I had towards this genre, so who knows, maybe there's more quality music here that I have yet to discover.

I have a problem with the word indie, I just can't tell you where does it begins and where ends. Anyway here a few several bands that may be called as "indie" and I consider good:

Yo La Tengo
Pavement
Neutral Milk Hotel
Guided By Voices
Beat Happening
Violent Femmes
Minutemen
Half Japanese

Are there any specific albums I should be looking at?

Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain*
Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Airplane Over The Sea
Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand*
Beat Happening - You Turn Me On
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes*
Minutemen - Double Nickels on the Dime*
Half Japanese - The Band That Would Be King*

* You may want to look for this records first since it seems you are more into punk.

All good to excellent/essential suggestions....however, it's In the Aeroplane over the Sea.

I am actually surprised he wasn't all over The Minutemen, already. Double Nickels on the Dime is ESSENTIAL!

Hold on, Geryon not only liked but recommended Ballboy?

Simon & Garfunkel really insist someone should be checking Geryon's closet for a pod!

If you like them....and I don't see how....and considering how many sub-genres Indie Rock can cover.

Big Black - Songs About Fucking
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation (or pretty much any Sonic Youth recording)
Slint - Spiderland
Pixies - Doolittle or Surfer Rosa
Negativeland - Escape from Noise
Dinosaur Jr. - You're Living All Over Me or Bug
Stereolab - Transient Random-Noise Bursts with Announcements or Emperor Tomato Ketchup
Royal Trux - Accelerator
Swervedriver - Mezcal Head or Ejector Seat Reservation
Belle & Sebastain - If You're Feeling Sinister or The Boy with the Arab Strap
Sebadoh - Bakesale or III
Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville (Her response to the Stones' Exile on Main St.)
The Arab Strap - The Red Thread (might be too mellow for you)
The Delgados - The Great Eastern
Ride - Nowhere
Slowdive - Souvlaki

There is a lot more if needed and once I have an idea which of those already mentioned in this thread you liked, I can drop them.

You don't like 'em?

But if Sonic Youth, for example, is Indie, then I suppose the genre doesn't really say that much, since it's nothing like the stupid snowboard game songs I was talking about...

Anyway, I'll start checking out the recommended stuff and get back to this thread.

1. No

2. Indie Rock is like Post-Rock....it's almost a meaningless title, now. In fact a lot of what is considered Post-Rock is also included under Indie. I added some of them in there.
