What's acid rock?

I saw it between the examples of genres that belong to this subforum and it got my attention. What is it?

At one time in the late 60's/early 70's anything in Rock with extended instrumentals was called Acid Rock....because a good deal of the time people were on LSD while listening to it. For example, bands like Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Doors, and Cream were considered Acid rock.

Hell, even Led Zeppelin was called Acid Rock before Heavy Metal or Hard Rock became genre names.

It's like your thread about Indie Rock or someone asking about Post-Rock. It could/can cover a great deal of bands/musicians.
