Popular Rap That Isn't Horrible
As is generally the case with any other musical genre I enjoy, for the most part I tend to prefer the (for lack of a better word) "underground" incarnations of rap music. Even so, from time to time I'll hear a track on the radio/internet/tv/etc. from a popular rapper that I find myself really getting into.
If any of you find yourself digging a popular rapper/song/album/etc. post your thoughts on it here.
P.S. I'm aware the site's name is radio mute

i actually heard Jay-Z's new single tonight DOA (death of autotune). i was pleasantly surprised, it kicked a pile of ass. awesome raw production, dirty live drums, slightly off key backing vocals, extra dirty fuzzy guitar action, wicked clarinet lead melody. i'm actually gonna listen to it again right now

I haven't heard that song but if you haven't heard The Grey Album already you should definitely check it out. It's a remix album by Danger Mouse (of Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkley, DangerDoom, etc.) using samples from The Beatles' White Album with Jay Z's raps from the Black Album over chopped up hip hop beats.

It would be really difficult to think of anything recent that would fit here. As for well-known rap, I dig several good artists. I'm thinking of the Wu-Tang Clan and Public Enemy for example. Compared to the modern day RnB frenzy this makes me undergroud as hell though.

Never cared for Jay Z in anyway or form. Geryon has more rapping talent. God Bless America that someone this much of a complete hack with so little talent can get so far. He's the Bush II of Rap....except he at least didn't have his father's coattails to get him there.
I listened to the track in question and it's not that interesting outside of the clarinet.

I admit I have an aversion to the majority of pop music, but I appreciate the purpose it serves. Different people enjoy different music for different reasons, and like many of my fellow RMers, I tend to prefer music that doesn't limit itself in order to appeal to a wider audience. That being said, pop may not be the pinnacle of creativity in music but there's nothing wrong with taking some time to rest from the perpetual quest for originality, meticulously written compositions, virtuosity, etc. and instead be open to a song because its catchy or danceable. I think lots of enthusiasts of subterranean music often get so caught up in the pursuit of artfulness that a verse chorus verse tune from time to time might help remind them that music doesn't have to stir philosophical contemplation in order to be enjoyable.

That's true, but I still hate RnB. In any other time men wouldn't have gotten away with listening to this deeply emotionally disturbed crap. I even prefer top 5O dance music any day of the week. And I admit that some pop music manages to get my mostly silent appreciation from time to time, but not like it's gonna make me buy any CDs or anything.

You really seem to go out of your way to generalize. For example. when you're disregarding all of R'n'B....do you mean what is being passed off as R'n'B today....or The Real GOOD S**T.....back when R'n'B actually meant something? There just might be a helpful hint in that question.
