Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out Legacy Edition

This week I purchased the Columbia/Legacy Edition of The Dave Brubeck Quartet's 'Time Out' album.

This album is too well known to really say anything more than what's been said historically and critically. It is one of my favorite albums on several levels.

What is special about this release is the DVD included, especially the 24:26 film entitled "Dave Brubeck On Time Out". Though short, Mr. Brubeck is a joy to listen to as he talks of the album, his fellow musicians, Goddard Lieberson, and how he composes.

Worth checking out.

what do they have to say about Paul Desmond in regards to that album and Brubeck's 'legacy'?

In the documentary, "they" being Dave Brubeck himself talks about the disparities in their personalities and what each member of the quartet brought to the group.

According to Brubeck, I came away with the impression that Desmond seemed the most introverted and hesitant to experiment.

That being said, I also came away knowing these are A-class musicians whose personal nuances added to the tension and release of the music they chose to explore.

Brubeck gives great credit to his fellow musicians.

Brubeck was the biggest ham fisted hack in the group....and one of the biggest in Jazz. You take away Paul Desmond (hesitant to experiment? ) & Joe Morello and there is close to no reason to listen to anyone of those recordings.

Maybe he forgot to tell that Desmond was the most talented, and if it wasn't for him, maybe he would have been nobody.

Anyway I still believe that Time Out is a very good recording and Take Five is one of my favorite compositions.

One more thing....Brubeck was so damn insecure as a piano player and vindictive....that he contractually didn't allow Desmond to record with any other piano player while part of the Quartet.

I don't have the insight to know the details of the personal relationships between these four people. I could believe what Satchmo says is true.

At the same time, is it really that negative?

Desmond spent a lot of personal time with the Brubeck family, had issues with alcohol, etc. They say he had wit and was well-read.

Insecurity? I know may musicians who have that quality.

Being a hack? I don't know. If you're competent with your instrument, create something new, make an impression on a wide audience, I would give the man some credit.

I know that histories get white-washed and sanitized.

I just can't condemn any of the men in this group. 'Time Out' is a decent enough album and I'm glad it exists. I wish Paul Desmond was still alive to still be playing and tell his story as well.

It's just a 25 minute documntary that's nice to see. It doesn't tell the whole story by any means.
