Rock music doesn't need saving. Maybe the majority of what you hear on the radio could use some help, but performing classic rock covers isn't going to help that. Matter of fact, nothing's going to help that because that's just the way pop music works. Obviously there have been plenty of creative musicians to perform music within that genre, but for the most part pop music exists as an antithesis to creativity in music. It's to recycle the same verse chorus verse bullshit so people can listen to music without it making them think too hard.
There's myriads of great rock music being made, and there's also lots of shitty rock music being made as well. I don't think there has been a time, in recent history at least, that this wasn't the case for any type of music. The idea that the only the era of classic rock produced the best rock music is ludicrous, there's always been good music and there's always been the other kind. Trying to make music that's already been made isn't going to do anything but create more mediocrity.

I agree. Apparently "little Steve" (my nickname for him) doesn't have a firm grasp on rock history himself.
Methinks shitty music has been around since caveman times. Speaking of which, does anyone remember how horrible 10cc was?

Which was actually the point of that part of my post. As in, I notice when any of you come and/or go. Who knows....maybe this time....you can stick around more than the usual 2-6 days.

I agree that there is still good music being made, and there always has been bad music. But it does seem way more rare than a few decades ago to make several good albums. There are lots of bands in the nowadays good genres who slipp off all too early. When was the last time a band like Metallica or The Clash or The Beatles succeeded in making a series of awesome albums, that on top of that all had their separate style?

1983-1989
1977-1982

or did you mean when other bands have followed in those footsteps in which case...
queens of the stone age?
mastodon?
radiohead?
i think you're onto something about the longevity of acts but only on a certain level. i think little stevie's biggest problem is that 'good' bands (the ones that don't make him remember he's old) don't last that long in the mainstream. i'm sure he was just tickled pink when the white stripes started getting popular a few years ago. unfortunately attention spans being what they are it didn't last and people moved on. anyone with a clue knows jack white is still pumping out records and they aren't really hard to find, but you actually have to go out there and look for it yourself. little stevie sounds like he's still expecting the hand of god to come through the static on the radio to spoon feed him the next batch of 'good' stuff.
hell the dude still dresses like he's on the 'born in the USA' tour from a quarter century ago. i'm actually quite happy that someone with a view as narrow as his thinks the state of modern music is garbage.

On second thought, maybe the Ghostbusters would be better suited for this job.

Yeah I mean other bands.
You could be right about Queens of the Stone Age. I'm not a big fan of Radiohead's genre so I couldn't tell.
Mastodon is definitely one of the bands I was talking about when doubting the ability to stay good. I think Remission is an awesome album. Haven't heard the second one yet. But Blood Mountain isn't anything near their first album. It's your typical "we've made some rough shit but now it's time to start copying Poison The Well" emoass bullshit. The same goes for the Dillinger Escape Plan.
But all in all I admit that there are still good bands who can keep their shit together. I think Gallows is a prime example of this, altough it's a bit early to tell.
