visually, sure he was a significant force in the group, overall, his guitar playing (or lack thereof) didn't really make or break what i heard. billy gould's bass playing was far more significant to establishing FNM's overall sound than big jim's guitar to my ears.
can someone please explain what made martin so significant from a musical standpoint?

From a musical standpoint, NO guitarist (Martin included) was as important to Faith No More's sound as other members. Vocals aside,
Billy Gould defined the FNM sound. After him, Bordin's playing was more important to the FNM sound than Martin's. To a lesser extent, Bottum's input with his pop sensibility was also important...and again, certainly more important than Martin. The KFAD album made it clear that Martin wasn't needed. They had Trey Spruance for that album!
People forget that Martin had very little input on the Angel Dust album. His main contribution there was writing the amazing Jizzlobber, but I have a very strong feeling that Patton changed that song from what Martin had initially visualized into the monster it is. At the end of the day, Martin's role as an important guitarist for the band (in terms of playing and input) was all but reduced to being a generally competent rock guitarist one the band decided to move on to different things with Angel Dust. As I understand, the next time a guitarist's input was welcome was when Spruance joined for the KFAD album. And that's understandable because Spruance's taste and vocabulary were considerably wider than Martin's.
All the above is not to say that Martin was insignificant. He just didn't define or make an impact on the music that others did. And I'm not a Martin-hater. I bought his Milk and Blood album which features Hetfield and Newsted.
