He may not be "pure country", but I personally can't get enough of Townes Van Zandt. Waiting Around To Die may be one of my favorite songs in any genre.

Also, if you're coming from a rock background, you may get a kick out of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks.

His cover of Dead Flowers is also incredible.

Hmm, Merle Haggard? Yeah?

Could have sworn I typed out DA HAG's name. Must have accidentally edited it out.

Townes Van Zandt was one of the best songwriters I've been lucky enough to come across in my life. If you're down with his vibe, check out Guy Clark too...they were friends in their youth and come from the same school of folk/country/songwriting.

Jack Scott is an oft forgotten great country & western singer/songwriter. I would like to also mention Marty Robbins, my favourite country & western artist. You may also like most of Van Morrison's Tupleo Honey album and his more recent full on country & western effort Pay the Devil.
