I didnt.. but I'm about to now. If you want to analyze it, go and ask any cunt on the street wearing metal or rock apparel, and ask them if they have heard of Mastodon.
Then ask them if they have heard of Swarm of the Lotus.
Now tell me what your defenition of mainstream is.
At the end of the day we could sit and beat off over the true definition, but as far as I'm concerened its relative. Mainstream music isnt necessarily JUST Britney and shit. I think metal has its own mainstream, as does jazz ect, and Mastodon are undoubtedly floating down metals main channel now. They're a fucken household name like Opeth and Strapping, who were also bands nobody had ever fucken heard of a few years ago. What I am telling you is that Mastodons music is now suffering, and I blame their increased interest in marketable success. They did the fucking introductory song for Aqua Teen's movie for fucks sake. Are you telling me that a band thats got a song on a (now check this word out) popular comedy franchise, ISNT a largely reputable band in the industry?
That said, now that I've mentioned Swarm... any Mastodon fans not familiar with the band should really check out their When White Becomes Black album.

All of this is true.
I actually really like the song they did for the ATHF movie though

Well I don't like this a whole lot better the second time around, although I do definitely like two of the songs, "Divination" and "Ghost of Karelia." "Crack The Skye" is interesting too but feels a little longish. I don't care much for the other two songs I have heard and I don't really feel like going after the two I am missing at the moment. Overall it's definitely a "download only" album.
Some of what they do here does work. This band is still capable of wonderful things regardless of how they choose to present themselves. But it just seems to drag on so much of the time that the few moments of brilliance are just not satisfying enough. It makes me wonder what it is they are trying to accomplish here. Perhaps it is simply that they were bored of making great metal and decided to try "something different" that just happens to have a little more broad appeal than what they were doing before. If so, may I suggest a new vocalist? I mean, if you are going to sing, you'll be compared with actual singers. I can't swim and I can't ski. You don't see me on doing a jump off of Mount Everest or trying to cross the English Channel. I can't sing either, so I growl (in key, when possible).
Either way the days are gone when I see a thread about a new Mastodon album and make a point to check it out ASAP.

Scott Kelly rips in the title track; clearly the best thing in the album is by someone out of it. Shrinebuilder would be something to get hyped up for depending on the amount of influence he has on it.

I am really digging parts of The Last Baron, its proggy but in a nice way. This and the title track are def. my favorites of the album.
I guess the songs will be more fun live when the vocals take a backseat.

It's kind of grown on me some since the first couple of listens. I still think if what they want is clean vocals they should go get a guy that can take care of that for them.
Oh and I have finally gotten songs 4 and 7. "The Last Baron" is, well, one of the more interesting Rick Rolls I have heard

So to you any band that most people who like metal know of is mainstream. Thats fine with me you can consider that mainstream. I don't mind the fact that you consider mastodon to be mainstream, however claiming that they just do it for the money is retarded. Its true that mastodon does try to spend as little time in the studio as possibleto save money, which bands need cause we all know metal bands dont make nearly what they should compared to bands like nickelback. Just because the bands music changes doesn't mean they just want money. Every mastodon albulm has gotten more melodic. Call of the mastodon was pure prog sludge metal hardly any solos and all growls. Then remission got a little bit more progressive and melodic with still mostly growl vocals, then leviathon got more melodic and even had singing in a few of the songs, and then blood mountain had even more melody and singing and now crack the skye. They have been transforming since they started. If you would read all the articles you would know that one of the reasons the band wrote a softer albulm is because they wanted to make a classic albulm that would stick around for a while due to brents close chance with death. They want to have their metal albulm that guarantees their name in history. Also this albulm was a dedication to branns dead sister. The fact is when you listen to this albulm i dont think of any songs that are going to be on the radio. This is the main thing i hate about some metal fans they hate it when their favorite band becomes successful instead of being happy for them. They call them sell outs cause they dont come out with the same albulm over and over. The fact is for a lot of bands if they would have kept the same sound over and over than a lot of amazing metal albulms would have never happened.
