help, can anyone identify this instrument?

hello everyone, i saw this instrument i've never seen before in a skip the other day i picked it up to examine it and saw that it was in a very bed state, probably irreparable. It's state of disrepair caused me some dismay as after seeing how it worked i wanted to take it home. It was flat with a fairly thin soundboard, i cant remember how many strings(quite a few, at least twelve) and looked like it should be laid on a table or something. it also had a certain amount of keys which when pressed would activate a chord enabling the other hand to pluck the strings. i have lokoed around a bit online but cant find anything looking like it if anyone thinks they might know what it is a reply would be greatly appreciated.

It could be some form of a Zither.

are you talking about an Autoharp?

EDIT: I suppose I had never looked at a zither before and then realized an autoharp was a type of zither. Perhaps the visual will help the person figure it out.

That's what I would have guessed you were describing as well. One of my oldest memories of learning music was of a junior high school music teacher playing one of these.
