You mention that you're not overly interested in American folk music, but does this exclusively mean Woodie Guthrie, Peter, Paul, & Mary, Simon & Garfunkle, early Dylan, and the sort? If so, you may then be interested in the other kind of America folk music, namely Blues, especially from the Mississippi Delta and Hill Country, and other styles of the South.

I briefly suggest:

Skip James -> http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=BtZ6Do...eature=related
Son House -> http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=rRsUdr1b9xg
Bukka White -> http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=bsMpHH...eature=related (note that the video is tagged incorrectly)
Mississippi John Hurt -> http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=lzMC-8oYzME (one of my favourite songs of all time)
Blind Willie Johnson -> http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=23oNGA156LE
Lead Belly -> http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=vmQXmq...eature=related
Mississippi Fred McDowell -> http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=9TyzAA...eature=related
Robert Johnson -> http://kr.youtube.com/watch?v=8vY3qZtZv3w
I also highly suggest looking into work songs and field hollers.

Finally, look into some African artists, like Ali Farka Touré (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-42F6...ature=related)
Salif Keita (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UURH...ature=related)
Toumani Diabaté (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SVAPvnR0og)
Ladysmith Black Mambazo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJF87m4_k88)
among others.

I've listened to them all personally and am quite fond of their music, that is the reason I listed them for you to check out.
