Haven't heard the Kangding Ray's album yet, but I really liked the 2006's Stabil, so I'm going to check that one out.

Another ones I forgot to mention were The Toad Disco's "In Secret Winter" and Valerio Cosi's "Heavy Electronic Pacific Rock", the last one could fit on the rock list as well.

he's got some interesting stuff on Schematic (where you'll find most of Richard Devine's discography). Much like Devine, he uses loads of ultra high res samples in highly saturated environments. Shirach is quite violent, but in a different way than Devine. Organic samples instead of machinery will flood the spectrum in funkadelic ways. 8,000 B.C. is the only recording that i actually have listened through; but it could be a good start for you since it is his first release (2001).

If you end up liking that try Oozing Bass Spasms or Global Speaker Fisting.

Electronic albums I listened to in 2008, actually managed to listen to more of these than I did jazz:

Alva Noto – Unitxt
Jóhann Jóhannsson – Fordlândia
Flying Lotus – Los Angeles
Autechre - Quaristice
Ryoji Ikeda – Test Pattern
Max Richter – 24 Postcards in Full Colour

The Richter and Ikeda didn't really do much for me, although at least they're better than that Portishead album! (no offense, autpt ). I also thought Quaristice was a bit of a letdown, although still good.

Oh yeah, and there was the Girl Talk album, which was pretty much good for what it was. The formula really lost its luster the second time around though, Night Ripper blew me away in a certain sense when I first heard it just because I'd never heard anything like it. The same probably would've happened with Feed the Animals if the two were released in reverse order, once the initial effect has worn off it's really just music that anyone with the necessary software and music knowledge could make, but it's still damn good for parties and driving.

i agree with you Jazz on the Ae album; it's kind of how i felt about Draft. Draft was just a bit dull for some reason. it didn't have the luster of the era of LP5 and EP7. i know they want to continue moving into new territory, but i'd love to see them get back to the Cichlisuite programming. those sounds were actually greatly produced merely through the NORD. we'll see what they do next.

Otto has had a transition phase over the years. His stuff on '8000 BC' and 'Escalo Frio' is more like Devine, while his latest material over the last 4-5 years has been really crazy DSP oriented verbal assaults. If you like '8000 BC', go to 'Escalo Frio'. Then, if you wanna try his crazier material, start with 'Chopped Zombie Fungus'. If you don't really care for that album, you most likely won't like anything else he's put out. He's gotten more viral and dirty after said album. You're into metal, so you might enjoy the latter ones as well.

Considering it was done with mostly hardware, I would say it is more superior than most of their output since ep7. I like 'Untilted' from time to time, but 'Quaristice' is special to me. Still has the abstract sound which is Autechre, but it reminds me so much of 'Chiastic Slide' at times, that I can't help but love it.

I think you mean 'chiastic slide', but 'Cichlisuite' is one of my favorite EP's which was produced at the same time.

I feel that Draft 7:30 is still one of the most under appreciated Autechre releases. Mostly because it was the 'Confield' successor which is a mindfuck all its own. That's the pivotal Autechre release where some think it's genius while others think it's shit. I've tried listening to it more than I can count and I can only get to 'Pen Expers' before I just think to myself...(do i really wanna listen to this anymore?). I think the people that loved 'Confield' (like you) were disappointed in the draft release because it didn't really have anything to do with the sound of 'Confield', while others, (like me) enjoyed the majority of it because it wasn't quite as abstract and was very listenable.

the songs 'Surripere' and 'Vproc' are my highlights of 'Draft 7.30'.
