Freddie Hubbard, R.I.P.

Freddie Hubbard, who I think most would consider one of the best trumpeters ever to play jazz, and who is personally among my favorite three, passed away this morning. Although he certainly played his share of avant-garde, he was also be one of the last greats from the pre-avant-garde era. In his prime, a master soloist whether he was playing in or out. He will be missed.

R.I.P. Freddie Hubbard, April 7 1938 - December 29 2008

For sure.

Hubbard played on more than 300 recordings, including some of the most important jazz albums of the 1960s, including Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage," Coleman's "Free Jazz," Eric Dolphy's "Out to Lunch," Coltrane's "Ascension," Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil" and his own classic, "Ready for Freddie."

full respect

It was a sad day when I received the call about his death. One of the True Giants in music.

When I went to edit Grasshoppa jazzfromhell's Favorite 3 thread to edit out DA MAN no longer being alive....it made me realize only 3 trumpet players on that list are still alive.

Some sage advice Hubbard offered to younger musicians:

"Don't make the mistake I made of not taking care of myself. Please, keep your chops cool and don't overblow."
