Chic were one of the leading Disco bands, and the chicks in the group were hottt!

And as usual, no Glam nominated this year.

Hey, I know who Wanda Jackson is. I dig her, too. I don't blame Canada!

i'm not going to count reading a quick blurb on wikipedia and checking out a video or two as 'knowing' an artist though hehe but she definitely has an elvis quality going (or vice versa)

If Madonna can get in, Chic can get in. They call it the "Rock and Roll" HOF but it really is just the "Album sales" HOF. Chic were an influence on a number of new wave bands, with one of their most prominent influencees being Duran Druan, a band that will almost certainly get in within one or two tries. They are selectively pretending to have specific standards when it benefits them.

I see Afrika Bambaataa is off the list now. Did he get in or did they just decide to forget him?

Well if it was just an album-sales HOF other artists that never even were nominated would've been inducted a long time ago.

To me it seems the HOF are trying to achieve some kind of diversity to legitimise their nominations.

I'd honestly prefer an induction based solely on sales. After all, sales reflect fame. Sales can hardly be argued against, they're relatively easy to verify.
Relatively soft criterias such as musical value, influence, originality or timelessness (word?) are debatable and often disputed, and most of all do not directly reflect fame.
We're not talking Hall Of Classy Music, but Famous Music.

Either way it is a popularity contest and a "what's cool to appreciate these days" thing. I actually am perfectly fine with influence and originality, and even some degree of subjectivity. All HOF votes across the board are subjective to a degree, which is why Barry Bonds will not ever get into the Baseball HOF even though his numbers should get him in on the first ballot (and likely would have even if he had not taken steroids).

But they need people that actually understand what the specific criteria actually means before it can successfully be applied. Johnny Cougar had no business getting in the Hall on the first try, if at all.

If you just go by sales you let the Beatles, ABBA and Elvis in, then close the place before Mariah catches up.

Based on sales Mariah has already caught up with if not surpassed Led Zeppelin, and I'm quite sure Elvis and ABBA are somewhat behind. Michael Jackson might still be ahead of her though.

I have no idea who Barry Bonds is, but I've heard of John Rocker, if only through Ted Nugent.

Altogether I could care less about the HOF. So far no Glam bands have been inducted, probably not even nominated. HOF or no HOF, they're great in my book.

Bowie is the only Glam related musician who has been nominated and has been inducted.

What about T-Rex?

If Chic gets in before T-Rex, than someone's on crack.

I was talking 80s Glam, as in Hair Metal. See the Emo vs Glam thread on the FSS.
