odds are that track was recorded in the late 80s.
as for the band:cornell ration angle. soundgarden was very much a band. kim thayil (the one who sounds like a kid trying too hard) was actually the only other memeber who was there from the get-go. audioslave on the other hand sounded like a forced combination to me.
i can see why you would call thayill's style child like based on that tune but he really did shoot to have his own style. it didn't sound sloppy by accident or error.

Agree with panbient.
Soundgarden was not just Cornell and the backing band but a whole band. Cornell had huge input (as one would expect).
But when the whole reason for the break up of the band is because there was a concern that Cornell was trying to move away from the band's signature style during the development of "Down on the Upside", that really tells the whole story. That Soundgarden was a band and not a one-man show. Thayil's guitar sound and layers over the years became part of Soundgarden's signature sound. I don't see how that can be missed.
A band like Faith No More was more of a one-man show when Patton took the reigns during the development of Angel Dust - he would assume even more control later.
