Neneh Cherry

What do you think of her?

A couple of videos of her most famous songs if you don't know them already. And check the evolution between these two tracks:-

When I think of her....I reminded of DA MAN....as in, her step-father and Eagle-Eye's father Don Cherry.

Hehehe...I knew you'd mention the Don Cherry connection.

What do you think of Neneh Cherry though? Personally, I think she had the talent, creativity and natural charm that should have earned her a lot more recognition than she actually got, if only she had been properly promoted in the US.

She had a lot more substance to her than most of the female pop artists out there. That's not exactly saying much , but I think Neneh Cherry deserves to be known a lot more...

It's easy for someone to rise up in a field of wannabes. From what little I heard she at least did that, but being "good for a pop singer" in and of itself isn't that impressive. My brother is constantly telling me how much better Killswitch Engage is than most of the other metalcore bands. He's probably right, but they fail badly in the real test, which is to compare them against bands that are actually good.

Now Neneh may be good in such a comparision, I don't know, but I didn't hear anything that would make her survive a more demanding context. I'd be willing to check her out again and see if she had more to her than being really good at making Top 40 stuff.

Like I said, saying that she has more substance than most of the other female pop artists out there doesn't mean much at all. But the fact is she didn't actually rise above those wannabes as she should have due to a severe lack of exposure in the US, which was very unfortunate.

My only point was that someone, who had what it takes to write good songs and who had a lot of charisma and style to boot, ought to have received more recognition than the wannabes did. Neneh is a real artist, in other words.

Which leads me to THIS question. What do y'all think of Alice Smith? Personally, I think she's great in so many ways.
