They released their new single now. OMG it's so fucking heavy...

Ok no it really isn't. The last part of the song basically sounds like a bunch of recycled riffs and then Hammett does that one solo of his. Is it better than Load (of shit) or Reload (the shit)? Well sure. I mean if I set goals like "I'll try to kill less people today" or "I'll do one less line of sawdust after lunch" then I could consider myself a major success on a daily basis.

I guess I'll give them credit for remembering how to play at "Shortest Straw" speed

Second single is better than the first, which isn't saying a heck of a lot. Just playing fast doesn't make you heavy. I think Rubin forgot to tell the band that.

Clearly going to turn out to be the best Metallica album of the millenium. I'm pretty sure I'll never listen to it though.

I didn't care for it. Lars doesn't sound like he's playing on dustbins but the drums still sound like s**t.

Several songs sound like poor imitations of previous glory day songs.

Shoutout to Cliff Burton!

Labor Day has come and gone. I didn't DL it yet, and I will to at least listen to it once or twice, but I am not in a hurry after what I have heard. However, I will still try to kill less people today.

They might have been smarter to not preview any of the album at all.

Agree with you about the drums. Nowhere near as bad as the St Anger sound but nowhere near a good enough sound.

I've heard the 1st two singles and had a tough time listening to them in their entirety. But being a sucker for punishment with a morbid curiosity, I did. And I'm all the worse for it.

Good mention for Slayer above, I thought I'd throw Megadeth in too. United Abominations isn't their best record but is light years above of St Anger, and from what I gather, Death Magnetic.

Rolling Stone loves the album.

In other news, Rolling Stone is still in print.

Tried it. The riffs are pretty fun especially in the first few tracks but I can't listen to the songs through coz they are too long. Probably could have gotten rid of about 3 mins.

I have it as of about an hour ago. Listening to it now, and I'll have to give a couple of listens before I can really decide if I think this is a good album or not. I have an early observation: this is actually a lot better of an album than what they had been doing recently (I know, not hard). It is interesting to hear some of the small nuances they add having 20 more years songwriting experience. That said, there are also times when it sounds like they are archaeologists trying to reconstruct the Metallica sound using old albums as a guide. But as far as what this might do to their legacy, well, it will actually probably help.

I'll try to get a more detailed take on this in the next few days, probably on the weekend. Hopefully someone will actually want to read it
