Bomb the Music Industry! is a musical collective headed by a dude named Jeff Rosenstock. Their schtick is that they release all their music for free online, they play all ages and free shows whenever possible, they spray paint t shirts brought to shows by fans for free rather than selling merch, and as such have no money. Consequently, they all need to wash dishes for a living when not on tour. Jeff has started a donation based record label called Quote Unquote Records (that I believe got some attention from Digg a couple weeks ago about some web-hosting related injustice), but, once again, makes no money from it. Their membership varies from just Jeff and an iPod to a twelve person ensemble, and they just happen to play music that I like more than any other music.
Also, if you learn one of their songs on any instrument (though they prefer homemade or otherwise odd instruments) they let you go on stage and play with them.
Their music incorporates synth-driven punk, some ska elements, and a lot of hardcore. I believe Dillinger Four are a huge influence, as are Neutral Milk Hotel.
Defiance Ohio are a folk punk band. I have significantly less to say about them, purely because they have less exciting politics (though they do travel with a DIY mobile bookstore instead of a merch table). Their music strikes that oft-attempted rarely perfect balance between adorable off-key bluegrassing and fist-pumpery that makes me want to go on bike rides and shit. It's fucking awesome.
I recommend you check both of them out. For Bomb, this is especially easy, because, as I said, all of it's free.
