BTW, I kind of think of Television as like new wave/art rock more than punk but I don't know, those labels are hard and more or less unimportant except as a crireria for these kinds of conversations.

After all, CBGB stands for Country, Bluegrass and Blues, so I wouldn't say it makes anyone who played there punk.

Proto-Punk
would be:

The Fugs
The Stooges
Velvet Underground
MC5
New York Dolls
The Flamin' Grooves
The Electric Eels
Patti Smith

I dunno, but they've never really sounded like a punk band to me. I can't prove it or convince anyone otherwise, I'm just going with what my ears tell me. Personally, the New York Dolls and the Stooges sound a lot more like punk to me than Television does. I'm not sure what I'd call them, they're kind of a tough group to categorize, but maybe New Wave, which is sort of the label I end up attaching to a lot of bands from the mid/late 70s and early 80s that sound a little punk but not all that much. As you can tell, I sometimes have difficulty with this categorization stuff, anything that doesn't sound right up one alley to me just gets thrown into a gray area.

It's worth noting that I'm basing my entire argument off of Marquee Moon. If they have other material that sounds different, I don't know about it and have been being really ignorant in this discussion.

That wasn't a response to anyone in this thread. It's just a viewpoint that comes up fairly often.

Translation:

I don't know about you....but I am surprised that Satchmo didn't break out with that poor dead horse and ask me if I was lost and/or make some sort of Ghost Ridin' the Whip comment.

Now excuse me....I have a car to dance with and climb over....which takes major skilz I might add with your pants down around your knees.

I've heard Television being categorized to death, but most often they're described as some sort of punk, the most ridiculous categorization being art punk. Is there any genre name farther away from punk than "art punk"? I hate that term.

Post-punk seems a bit more correct, but ultimately I think of them as a rock band with new wave sensibilities.

Yeah, I've already given my answers, and I included Television only on the strength of them being widely considered punk.

If that's the case I must include Sonic Youth.
