Though I think Marquee Moon is one of the best albums from the '70s, I've never really understood why Television is labled a punk band.
Anyway, they're on my list along with Bad Brains and early Black Flag.

Maybe because they were the first band to play on the legendary CBGB which is considered one of the birthplaces of punk.
And I agree, Marquee Moon is an excellent album!!

Eh, Patti Smith and even Bruce Springsteen played at CBGB a bunch and I wouldn't label either of them punk (particularly the latter ). I wouldn't name Television as a punk band, myself, and I'm pretty sure I remember Satchmo saying the same (I think he called them proto-punk or something). After all, CBGB stands for Country, Bluegrass and Blues, so I wouldn't say it makes anyone who played there punk.

I can't stand the Clash or the Ramones.
My controversial post of the month.
Seriously, I hate 'em.

I'd definitely call Patti Smith and Television punk (Springsteen is pushing it), but then I'm of the mind that putting extreme stipulations on a genre is a really stupid thing to do (e.g. you had to be playing such-and-such clubs in either New York or the UK during 1977, etc...).
Also I don't really care for The Clash much either but The Ramones are too fun not to enjoy.

Maybe you are right, but still the majority calls Television a punk band. And if is not because of the music they played, and not because of the context they were in, then why do you think they are called a punk band then?

On the stipulations issue, I really don't think that's the way how I was putting it at all.

I decided to stick with bands undeniably in the punkosphere.
On the question of who is or isn't how 'bout The Stooges?
