A Great Band / 2 = 2 Great Bands.

A recent discussion has prompted this thread. How many great bands can you think of that broke up and spawned more great bands?

The band that started this thought for me was Uncle Tupelo which broke up and yielded Son Volt and Wilco. Both of which are as good (imo) as the original. Genre doesn't really apply here, but I would have to say that it was more than one band.

Have at it.....

I guess you could go the Guns 'n Roses route with Izzy Stradlin & The Ju Ju Hounds, Velvet Revlover, and Slash's Snakepit. However I wouldn't necessarily call any of them great.

How about the Pixies into The Breeders and Frank Black and The Catholics, they have a few decent records, although neither both are the Pixies.

This might not really fit your request perfectly, but Wu-Tang Clan came to mind. They never broke up, but there were several excellent solo projects that emerged.

Some may say the Bauhaus -> Tones on Tail -> Love & Rockets cycle. Not me necessarily, but some.
