There really is more profit for stores to deal in used records/cds/dvds.

Most of these stores should do what Amoeba does....but they don't and end up closing down. Lost tract of how many stores around all three of the Amoeba stores have gone under.

My main store is now a used-store franchise called CD Warehouse. There are 3 in the Raleigh area, and their prices are what keeps me coming back. There are a couple of people in each of the stores that know about music and can drop knowledge on the normals. Overall they don't charge for special orders, have a nice buy 15 get the next one free card, and generally their CDs go for around $7.99 per disk. They are also part of an online community that moves product that is in demand somewhere else around.

Overall very nice to find older stuff and occasional gems, but as for finding newer cutting edge type stuff. It is still special order and most of the time you can get it cheaper on half.com.

Half?

You obviously missed one of Satchmo's knowledge droppings.

Depending on how big the musician/band is and their royalty fees it costs the majors between $3 to $4 to manufacture a cd....and that includes the royalties, marketing, recording costs and whatnots. The rest is the profit that the labels and stores make.

While costs of manufacturing them have gone down from the early days the sale prices have gone up.

Most of my favorite places for WTF? musicians/bands that you will not find in the vast majority of stores now all have internet sites.

You should have gotten a good many of them in the Grasshoppa List pm.

BTW. Walmart/Circuit City/Best Buy sell their CDs at a loss.

The strategy is to get customers into the store so they will drift from the music section and buy other items. Computers, vacuum cleaners, tail-pipe extension hoses when they're ready to gas themselves to death in the garage.

That I did. Most of my purchasing happens at the CD Warehouse. Which is close to where my wife works, so that works out nicely.

i think the DVD situation is here to stay. it's not really a cd store anymore so much as a media store. if it's on a plastic disc they sell it there.

the real question is - who still cares to buy a music cd? especially at $20-$30 a pop.

I didn`t think of the store manager when I said knowledge. Giving the means, which is internet and maybe mags, should be plenty. Integrate an internet cafè and charge for it. Doing hybrid new and used CDs would also work great, keeping prices down for those that don`t have much to spend or just for a better selection.
