I wish it wasn't morning and I didn't have to go to school right now, so I could respond to this thread. As it is, I don't have time, and it'll get eaten up by Satchmo or maybe Zola.

I don't do the over-indulgence, so I'll give you just a few of my immediate favourites and allow enough room for everyone to dig in. No worries, Jazz!
I really dig early BT Express. They had charm and of course could lay down some heavy grooves. Here's a sample:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nm-KwLU_j8
You can't go wrong with Sly & The Family Stone:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAsiKoeqN6E
Rufus "The Funkiest Man Alive!" Thomas has some chunky beats and can be real funny. Highly entertaining:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A9gO59ooAA8&NR=1
Jazzy, soulful, and funky, The Gaturs were stellar. Willie Tee was the man! *Edit(I just realized that this video has a Danny White tune at the end. Double funk for yer buck)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3V2VTd_m3So
Camille Yarbrough released only one album, The Iron Pot Cooker, and my, my. It's more along the lines of soul, but it has a deep funk feel to it, especially in the basslines. You'll recognize this forgotten classic by a more famous song that samples it heavily:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zg1oh45n5iI
For an excellent modern group who can funk with the best of them, The Budos Band on Daptone Records (my favourite contemporary label).
And I love this video because it has clips from one of my favourite classic Superman cartoons:

And, of course:

Enjoy, Stardust!

Why do I get the feeling this was meant for Satchmo?
