basically it boils down to this - there are 2 ways to look at the band. 1 - three guys who played sloppy power chord rock. 2 - the last really big thing to shake up the mainstream before the internet changed how people directly related to music.
if you stick with comparing their songs to other band's songs then yeah they're going to come off as overrated. from a technical standpoint they weren't that great. while they were all talented none were virtuosos.
on the other hand nirvana as a cultural influence was massive. whether you like their music or not shouldn't be a factor in recognizing this.
best band ever? - hardly
the last really significant band to happen to rock music? - absolutely.

This is smart, and exactly what I wanted but couldn't find the words to say.
Whoever this new "panbient" character is, I hope he sticks around. He's got some fresh new ideas.

Yes, I have to say that was a great post by panbient. Thank God he didn't say Radiohead was the last significant thing to happen in rock music.

thanks guys hehe, every now and again the neurons line up right and something worth reading comes out. i also think radiohead is great but they hardly had the impact on the mainstream that their 'underground' fans like to think they did.

So... are you calling me a Radiohead 'underground' fan?

not in the least hehehe. but i'm sure you understand what i'm getting at. all the people who really got into radiohead's stuff around 1999-2000 and who were familiar with all their influences due to being part of the boom that saw the net take over as the medium for learning about new music and everyone having a giant boner for 'IDM'. the issue is a lot of them still think they have really obscure tastes almost 10 years later because they're not hearing it on the radio, but haven't clued into the fact that their 'undergroud' source for new music (the internet) is now on the same level as the 'mainstream'.

Yeah I get you, like if you were exclusive because you knew all those obscure bands nobody knew, and then suddenly everybody knows them, and it happened so fast that you still can't asimilate that.

exactly. the idea that learning about a band online and it being some sort of obscure underground knowledge more than about 2 weeks later is laughably out of date.

They were great, but Kurt's spokesperson for a generation thing's led to them being overhyped. There are always going to be teenagers prone to teenage angst who get into Nirvana - the teenage angst band.
