For a time it was big, but now it's barely even remembered unless you have Satchmo type memory. Ok, it's not that rare but it gets the point across.

I still have a very tenuous relationship with opera, but I should've known about that one.

You're welcome. Although, I am not sure why anyone would use an almost forgotten and obscure opera as part of an introduction to DA MAN as in Goethe in German language class?

He could have used the film Mephisto if he wanted it in German.

Judging from his enthusiasm during The Operas of Wagner class I think he is an opera freak. He likes to force it on students when he can, and him being one of those Teacher/Deans...... you get the picture. Besides showing younger folks the joys of obscure musical selections is not all that uncommon.
