Another thing men can do is aim their pee with considerable accuracy.

Every generalisation has a few exceptions. That is the way of the world.

In the case of she who shall not be named for chiron's sake, I don't understand how she responds to music at all, honestly. She hates all Jazz and doesn't really care much for the Blues or R&B, but loves western Classical music and Black Metal. She's also down with Bluegrass and traditional Country, so there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to her tastes, and it's not that one style connects with her more "emotionally" as the article describes, but just pleases her more aesthetically.

What's also interesting, not to bring race into the discussion too, but I'm the white guy who's listening is largely devoted to "black music", while the lady of Nigerian descent has tastes that are primarily in the area of "white music". Not that it matters, I just think it's interesting.

I'm also the type to judge music based on an entire album, while she nit-picks individual songs that she likes. In the car, I tend to want to play through entire albums, but if she's with me, I'll inevitably have to skip half the tracks of any given release. Also, she tends to focus on strange individual elements of a song that I barely pick up on that annoy her terribly...like on a spare repeated note in the background or a cymbal pattern or something that just drives her crazy, it's strange.

I guess there's one expected response from her to the music I listen to...she absolutely refuses to let me play Ween in her presence.

By black music you of course mean Jazz. I think that has to be highlighted.

Agreeing to not bring race into the discussion but .

I once was having a discussion with some dude that I had just met at a bar I used to DJ at (a request bar, not a bar), and the guy just loved Gangsta rap. I continuously told him that I don't like the genre as he kept riddling off names of artists. "Bro, you mean you don't like Ma$e?!" "No, not really. Schoolly D is pretty funny, but I guess he's not really Gangsta Rap." "Bro, you gotta like N.W.A., word?" "No. I'm straight outta Newfie. I dig Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, though." Then he said I just don't understand "black music." At the time, I was wearing my self-made shirt "Lead Belly - European Tour 1949." He had no clue who Lead Belly was.

Straight outta Newfie.

Why? While it's tied for the most represented genre in my collection, my Blues, R&B/Funk/Soul and Hip Hop sections aren't complete slouches either. Besides, when talking about the vast majority of popular music innovation of the 20th century, we're talking about "black music".

I generally don't really like talking about genres in terms of race, as there have always been hugely influential/important figures of diverse backgrounds in all genres, particularly Jazz, but it can't be denied that the vast majority of significant artists in all of the above mentioned genres have been of a particular background...just as the Country and Classical genres, while there are outliers, is populated primarily by another. This is neither good nor bad, it's simply the shape of the culture, and ultimately, I enjoy all of it, but I do find my tastes leaning heavier in one direction. That said, part of the magic of music is that it's truly a universal form of art and communication, regardless of your particular background.

I just found it interesting, and another reflection of the universal nature of music, that people can get the most satisfaction, and feel the most connection, from the music of people from a completely different background or culture. I only wish the person earlier mentioned could open her ears to the sounds of those more closely connected to her, but what can you do.
