One of the first ones to come to mind that I'm not positive you've heard already.

It's difficult thinking of artists that you may not be aware of, Orwell.

Possibly Emil Beaulieau? I have Memories and it's a difficult experimental noise release.

John Appleton's Appletone Syntonic Menagerie from 1969 is another classic release that you may or may not have heard.

like josh's choice mine isn't so much out there as much as being a shock when i first heard it.

niandra lades and usually just a t-shirt is john frusciante's first solo album (actually a collection of 2 eps), the bulk of the disc are untitled 4 track experiments and from the sound of things, lots of heroin. there's a bad brains cover 'big takeover', an elton john rip 'your pussy is glued to a building on fire', and then in the middle of wacko heroin fueled screams of agony layered over multitudes of guitar tracks you get a piano / clarinet duet.

it really wasn't what i was expecting after cutting my teeth on his work on mother's milk and blood sugar sex magik but it definitely helped me see another side of a musician that had a substantial effect on my own development. and some of the untitled tracks are still some of my favourite instrumental guitar pieces out there.

writing this album off based on what you heard from the red hot chili peppers would be a mistake.

how about this one...

Mike Patton 'Adult Themes for Voice'

I believe this falls in the inaccessible and bizarre category.

If you like that, the solo catalogue of Demetrio Stratus is fairly essential listening.

This might also be of some interest:

Borbetomagus - self titled (1st) and 'Voice Crack'

An upstate NY group that's into 'sound'. The above mentioned albums are the ones that are in my collection, but there are several more out there. I don't go back to them too often

Pat Metheny - Zero Tolerance for Silence

Electric guitar sandpaper. Thanks Pat.
