Some subgenres:
Early Metallica (first four albums) are considered "Bay Area Thrash Metal". Other popular acts of this subgenre would be Megadeth, Exodus, Testament, Overkill, Anthrax.
Iron Maiden, Dio, Saxon are/were part of the NWOBHM ("New Wave Of British Heavy Metal"), which started in the late 70s/early 80s.
Although Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne made similar music, they weren't part of that subngenre since they had been around longer.
Motörhead are considered punk by some, classic rock by others, sometimes metal. Classic case of embracing several subgenres. Also depends on which album/era of the band we're talking here.
Accept with their third and especially fourth album are considered the first "speed metal" band.
Mötley Crüe, Ratt and Bon Jovi were among the first popular "glam metal" acts, Guns n' Roses, Skid Row and Roxx Gang made "sleaze rock". Both styles are rather similar.
Personally, subgenres are pretty uninteresting to me. Why bother? Just check the recommended albums and see if you like some of them. And BTW, you can check the subgenres on Wikipedia and/or Allmusic.com , even though some of it is rather inaccurate if not wrong. But then again it's not an official science and one can really care less.

Jeesh, too much old stuff. I'm more of a hatebreed, meshuggah, divine heresy, hord, sort of listener. I was just browsing myspace looking for new stuff to listen too and bought the hord album after listening to a few tracks. It's freaking awesome, they call themselves metalcore. I don't really get wrapped around the sub genres, only if I like a band and want to find more stuff like it.

Wow, that really contributed to Gluesniffer's request.

I know, it wasn't nearly as great as your post, but I sure gave it my all.

1. You still didn't answer the question about checking similar previous threads.
2. I was hoping by now that someone else would be dropping knowledge....but no one does anytime soon....I guess I will have to get around to doing it.

No, I didn't check similar previous threads. I might just do so. Altough I doubt that a little renewed activity would hurt this forum.
