Question What is music?

I really have no idea on how to describe music, or what does music needs in order to be considered as music. A few decades ago John Cage asked the question, what is music?
So, what is music?

It's an idle question asked by aspiring composers who are too lazy to do their homework.

Thank you for your reply, but IMHO I think that your answer is incomplete. A baby crying is an emotion I can hear, and I do not consider that to be music.

Maybe I'm not getting exactly what you mean, but as far as I can understand, you are saying that John Cage was lazy and didn't do his homework?

1. He wasn't talking about Cage. The fact that he added in "inspiring" composers should have been a hint. A couple decades ago Cage wouldn't have been considered an inspiring composer.....especially when you consider he had been composing since 1932 and died a little over 15-years-ago.

2. Cage never asked "What is Music?". His work 4:33 (from 1952) has lead many to ask that, however. So in that way he indirectly asked the question....if that's what you mean, that is?

Organzied sounds for the purpose of entertainment, even one's own. This is how I have always described music.

Well, I hope I'm saying this right, but anyway here goes:

"Sounds and silence arranged on a certain time intentionally for the porpuse of communicate something, to create a certain mood or to release a certain emotion on the listener."
