you're totally right. for me i enjoy the moment, i like when i feel that my brain has shut off. a lot of times i find myself day dreaming about completely unrelated stuff while playing music. like how the air feels different around you when you're jumping from stone to stone across a stream because of how the wind is shaped by the trees if flows between. and where i've played with my drummer on a regular basis so much i know with absolute certainty that we won't knock each other into the water regardless of how either of us twists our current groove.
unfortunately when you tell people you just want to 'jam' the bulk of them go into classic rock mode. to 'jam' necessitates some recognizable connect the dot motif that everyone takes a turn scribbling on. or to 'improvise' requires a complete and conscious avoidance of the 1 and conventional structure.
now i realize that's a gross generalization but it's how the bulk of people i've met operate. that or they're willing to play along with us but draw the line at a public performance because it has to be 'something'.
as for getting in the way, when you live in a town that has about 4 regular venues for local acts if you're not seriously trying to accomplish something you're pretty much costing someone who is a chance on a stage.
