Recommend me some classical symphonies

Ok I remember music class to be very boring, and may be a reason for me to never aproach to classical music.
But in here I have found very interesting things and you have really convinced me to dig the music all you guys like.
So here is my thread for classical music.
It also would be nice to see some lists, maybe your favorite ones, or to mention in which point someone like me should start from.
Thank you all in advance again.

Here is something to keep you busy until I have time to get to Symphonies, for you. However, Beethoven's aka DA KING's 9th Symphony is the top of any list made by Satchmo for Symphonies.

A whole LOT of knowledge alert!

I listen to classical music all the time, probably because I discovered it on my own. It wasn't regimented to me by some twit pedant.

When there are many recordings of the same piece, get the better ones.

Here's what I suggest you start with:

Fritz Reiner conducting Dvorak / Symphony # 9

If this doesn't win you over, not much else will.

More information...

Thank very much Satch and Roivas. This will make me busy for a while. I'll start off with Beethoven 9th and Dvorak 9th.

I am curious now, Roivas you are saying that the performer is very important . In what way? Does every performer add like a certain style, or changes part of the sonwriting or something? or it has to do with the instruments they use? I really have no idea on this.

Thanx again, and as soon as I start listening to something I will let you know what I think.

In classical music the conductors, musicians, vocalists are important.

Keep in mind most of the composers have been dead for a long time. All there is their manuscripts with directions like Allegro, Adagio, Forte, Fortepiano, Presto, Pianissimo, etc....written on the manuscripts.

How that is interpreted is decided by the conductors of a Symphony....and the quality of the music is going to determined by how well the musicians/vocalists perform.

A conductor may choose to play a Symphony quickly on one occasion and slower on the next. Depending on the conductor and performers this may work or may not. Which is why fans of Classical will have multiple recordings of compositions they like.

For example, above I gave you two links of recordings for Beethoven's 9th which I enjoy.

How well any genre music sounds depends on those performing it....just like how it sounds depends on how they play it.

In Rock terms....for the quality comparison...

Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
has been covered many times. No two versions sound the same and some are good and some are good....and none of them sound like Hendrix's original, or are anywhere as good.

It's no different in Jazz....take any Jazz standard and you will a great many ways it will sound and performed.
